All courses transferred into JCU must meet content and learning goal criteria to satisfy requirements in the Core. As long as students earn a “C” or better in a course, the course will be evaluated for credit at JCU. Grades for transfer courses will not count towards your GPA at John Carroll.
Types of Course Credit JCU Accepts
Advanced Placement (AP) courses, administered by the College Board, are college-level classes in six academic areas that students can take while in high school. Those who opt to take the year-end AP Examinations can also potentially receive college credit.
Once students commit to John Carroll and submit their enrollment deposit, they should request that their AP test scores be sent directly from the College Board to John Carroll for an official credit evaluation.
.The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme prepares high school students for success at the university level. The academically challenging, internationally focused curriculum includes courses in six subject areas. Students taking year-end IB examinations can also potentially receive college credit.

麻豆社 grants credit for college-level classes that a student completes. Credit will be accepted from regionally accredited institutions as long as students achieve a grade of “C” or better.
Credit is subject to the following restrictions:
- Credit will not be given for courses completed with the lowest passing grade, though these courses need not always be repeated.
- Courses completed with a “Pass” grade will not be accepted unless it can be established that the “Pass” was the equivalent of a “C” grade or higher.
- No credit will be given, even as general electives, for courses in orientation, applied arts, athletics, or technical training that do not contribute to the goals of a liberal arts education.
- In no instance will a John Carroll degree be awarded to a student unless 60 semester hours have been completed at 麻豆社 and at least 50% of the major requirements are completed at John Carroll.
- The limit of transfer credit is 60-semester hours.
For first-year students, once students commit to John Carroll and submit their enrollment deposit, they should request that an official transcript be sent from the college(s) at which the classes were taken directly to John Carroll for an official credit evaluation.
For transfer students, determination of credit transferability occurs at the time of admission evaluation and decision. A listing of the applicant’s courses and credits that are transferable to 麻豆社 will be sent to the admitted student upon acceptance.
John Carroll welcomes applications from students at community colleges who are looking to transfer to complete their four-year bachelor’s degree. The limit of transfer credit is 60 semester hours.

The College Level Examination Placement (CLEP) is designed to assist students who, through personal study and effort, may have developed the knowledge, understanding, and skills normally associated with certain college-level courses. The amount of credit granted will depend on the tests taken, the scores achieved, the degree program to be pursued, and the major field.
Earned CLEP credits do not convert to letter grades and do not apply towards graduation honors. CLEP scores must be submitted at the point of matriculation. Students planning to take CLEP exams should consult the Office of Admission for a list of exams accepted and scores needed for the award of credit.
The University awards transfer credits for various international exams on a case-by-case basis. The most common type is the General Certificate of Education- A-level, but other exams will also be considered. Students who have made an enrollment deposit at John Carroll and who wish to submit their exam scores for award of credit should present official documentation of those scores to the Office of the Registrar.
Course Credit Guidelines and Policies
A minimum of 30 credit hours must be completed in residence at John Carroll. At least 50% of the credits for the major must be earned at John Carroll or through an approved dual-degree or study-abroad program.
Academic Approval
Approval of the application of transfer credits to a major program is determined by the chair of the major department, with the approval of the appropriate dean.
All academic petitions for transfer courses needing further consideration (i.e., for Core and/or special designations) must be submitted by the end of the second semester after matriculation. Petitions should be submitted (with course descriptions and syllabi) via the Academic Petition System. The Academic Petition System can be accessed through the Student Profile under the Academics and Registration Services tab in Banner.
Military Training and Service
Military training and service will be evaluated for credit based on American Council on Education (ACE) recommendations. Students who have completed military service need to have a JST transcript sent for further consideration.
Reduced Core Policy
For students who transfer in more than 45 credits, we offer a reduced Core policy. The total number of Core-specific courses that are to be taken at JCU will be significantly reduced.

- Some programs of study require foundational coursework in oral communication, foreign language, or quantitative analysis. (The prerequisites for these programs will not be waived.)
In addition, students who bring in 45+ credits must complete the following core requirements:
- One linked pair of courses from the Integrative component of the Core curriculum.
- One Engaging the Global Community course from the Integrative component of the Core curriculum.
- Two courses (six credits) from the Jesuit Heritage component of the Core curriculum.
