Program Overview & Outcomes

Whatever you’re studying at JCU, adding a minor in English can enhance your educational experience and give you an edge after graduation. You’ll further hone your skills and gain specialized expertise by choosing one of three concentrations:

Literature

Read and analyze creative works across genres, regions, and time periods—and discover why so many of them are still influential today. Our broad range of literature courses cover topics like Chaucer, Shakespeare, American Nobel laureates, African American literature, and feminist literary criticism.

Professional Writing

Learn the fundamentals of business communication. You will also gain specialized writing skills and knowledge in areas such as grants, new media, and the health sciences. This minor also requires a professional writing internship.

Creative Writing

Explore forms and techniques, workshop drafts with peers, and gain valuable insight from expert faculty members and visiting writers. You’ll participate in intensive, small-group workshops and grow as a writer in your genres of interest, such as poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction.
