As you prepare for middle school teacher licensure in Ohio, you’ll develop content area specialization and gain plenty of real-world experience in Cleveland classrooms.

Program Overview & Outcomes

As a future middle school teacher, you have the opportunity to specialize in a content area. Maybe you want to inspire a love of literature? Or perhaps you want to challenge students to solve problems by teaching math or science?

In addition to your core education courses, you’ll take classes in two content areas, including:

You'll develop knowledge about teaching, learning, assessment and the profession through professional and pedagogical studies and disciplinary content courses. The program culminates in the professional year with student teaching experiences. Many of the University Core courses may fulfill program licensure requirements.

    Teaching and Learning the Structure of the Real Numbers and Operations is a surprisingly complex course. To be an effective teacher of mathematics, you need a thorough and deep knowledge of numbers and their structure. This course provides a comprehensive exploration of counting, number systems (base ten, whole numbers, fractions, decimals, integers, irrationals, complex), and number operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), particularly as these topics relate to early childhood, elementary and middle school education.     Teaching and Learning Proportional, Algebraic and Geometric Reasoning is a continuation of the mathematics and pedagogy explored in ED 2411. We consider additional topics in number theory, proportion, algebra, geometry and measurement. Throughout the course, we will critically consider how to incorporate inclusive and antiracist learning theories into the day-to-day writing center consultations.
