Study of classical and contemporary formulations of the concept of race, the nature of modern and contemporary racism, and contemporary constructions and experiences of racial identity in the U.S.

Sociological perspectives on contemporary masculinities and men's lives. Topics include men's experiences with relationships, sports, violence, family, sexuality, caregiving, health systems, media portrayals and work. Includes analysis of the differing viewpoints on male stereotypes, as well as the consequences for men, women, and the broader society.

Study of prejudice and discrimination, including their history, contemporary sources, and prospects for their reduction, with application to U.S. institutions. Particular emphasis on understanding the social construction of difference and the experiences of stigmatized statuses, as they relate to sex and gender, race/ethnicity, sexuality, class, and disability.

Introduces basic concepts of public health and explores major public health issues in the United States. Central focus on health disparities regarding who becomes ill and inequalities of access to treatment due to stereotypes, racism, and social class.

Social causes of violence in the family, especially dynamics of child and spouse abuse. Review of current research with attention to measures for preventing family violence and treating its effects.

Examination of the cultural and structural relationships of women and gender (relations) in sport and society. Particular focus on issues of culture, structure, and organization as they relate to masculinities and femininities, gender relations, and sex and sexuality. Survey of past and current developments of women and gender in sport in North America.

Social scientific examination of human sexuality, including biological, social, cultural, and psychological aspects throughout the life course. Topics include sexual identity, expression, and variation; sources of beliefs and attitudes about sexuality; the influence of changing gender roles and norms; and the social, psychological, and health consequences of sexual behaviors. Prerequisite: One SC course.

Study of the relationship among culture, biology, and social expectations of male and female behavior cross-culturally in global context. Topics include gender, health, and the body; gendered work and social change; gender and family; religion; social movements and gender; comparative sex/gender hierarchies; gender and sexuality; gender and globalization.

Examination of social issues impacting Latina/o communities (Chicanas/os, Mexican-Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and Central Americans) within the U.S., abroad, and in this emerging transnational space. Topics include ethnic movements, immigration, identity construction, borderlands, labor, education, gender, and language policies. Prerequisites: EN 125 or EN 1250 (or equivalent) and one SC course.

Representation of women in ancient literature and art. An examination of both fictional and real women (e.g., Medea, Cleopatra) and the everyday details of anonymous women’s lives.

Considers the role of women (European, black, and Indian) and different ethnic groups (whites, Indians, and peoples of African descent) in the making of Latin American history. Special attention is paid to the socially-based construction of ethnicity.

Explores the role that Catholicism and the Catholic Church played in shaping women’s roles in colonial Latin America (1500-1800). Examines lives of famous female saints and sinners, as well as women intellectuals who found an ambiguous role in nunneries. Demonstrates the influence of Catholicism in constructing gender norms that defined orthodoxy and deviance for women in their social and spiritual experiences. Prerequisite: EN 125 or EN 1250 or equivalent.

Survey of work by British, American, and Anglophone women writers since 1800, with primary attention to lyric, short fiction, and drama.

Explores literary treatments of violence against women (and by women) in Western culture and, together with PS offering 'The Psychology of Gender-based Violence', with which it is paired, will enable you to deeply understand, assess, research, and respond to the relationship of violence and gender around the world. Corequisite: PS 2930. Prerequisite: EN 121 or EN 1210 or EN 125 or EN 1250.

In this course, students will examine literary representations of alcohol and its effects across American society and in a wide variety of literary genres. Because alcohol abuse affects people regardless of class, gender, sexual orientation, and race, students will find a diversity of voices and experiences represented in the course. A study of various theories of feminist literary criticism. The social construction of gender and identity, the possibilities of women's creative expression, and the influence of gender-related issues on the study of literary texts. Prerequisite: Any 2000-level or 200-level English course.

Excerpts from works by Marie de France, Christine de Pisan, Catherine Des Roches, Madame de Sévigné, George Sand, Colette, Marguerite Yourcenar, Simone de Beauvoir, Andrée Chédid, Anne Hérbert, Mariama Bâ, Maryse Condé, Assia Djebar, Hélène Cixous, and Julia Kristeva. Prerequisite: FR 201 or FR 1030, or equivalent, or demonstrable intermediate-mid proficiency.

Explores the legal and narrative sections from Talmudic tractate Kiddushin utilizing a wide variety of reading strategies (e.g., legal, text-and form-critical methods, Feminist criticism, and Queer theory). Prerequisite: EN 125 or EN 1250 or equivalent.

Explores Christian spirituality, religion, and theology from the LGBTQ+ perspective. Topics include the origin, history and themes of queer theology and its relation to Queer Theory; queering scriptural hermeneutics and theological doctrines; the intersection of queer people of color; and societal and ecological engagement in the post-colonial western world. Case studies on queerness, race, and ethnicity in Womanist, Asian-American, Latina/o, and Two-Spirit Indigenous theologies. Prerequisite: EN 125 or EN 1250 or equivalent.

Study of human sexuality, its meaning and mystery, and ethical issues related to sexual behavior and attitudes, all from a Christian perspective. Considers Christian wisdom in light of human experience and contemporary theories of the meaning and significance of sexuality, with special attention to the relationship between spirituality and sexuality. Prerequisite: EN 125 or EN 1250 or equivalent.

Examines how trauma physically affects the brain and body, as well as the complex psychological sequelae associated with the various forms of trauma. Discusses the approaches to healing the body and mind, including traditional and alternative approaches such as yoga, theatre, EMDR, movement. Prerequisite: EN 1250 or equivalent. Corequisite: EN 2686. Offered: Once a year.

Globally high levels of incidences of violence are gender-based. Girls and women experience disproportional and more brutal levels and forms of violence. Provides a psychological framework for identifying and understanding the causes of such violence. Particular areas of violence that boys and men experience, but not readily discussed, will also be addressed. Prerequisite: EN 1250 or equivalent. Corequisite: EN 2681. Offered: Once a year.

Focuses on anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. How psychologists diagnose and treat those with an eating disorder. Also, etiological models of eating disorders that focus on genetic/biological, environmental, and socio-cultural (e.g., media) influences. Medical complications of eating disorders and the role of the physician, dietician, and nutrition in addressing them. Prerequisite: PS 100 or PS 101 or PS 1000 or PS 1010. Offered: Once a year.

An introduction to the study of families from a sociological perspective. We will be examining the family as an individual, social, and institutional experience and looking at how changes in American family patterns have been shaped by larger social forces. We will also be studying how families are shaped by the intersections of race and ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality. Some of the topics that will be addressed include cohabitation, marriage, divorce, parenting, poverty, family violence, work-life balance and family policy.
