Chemistry
Bachelor of Science
Some of the most exciting breakthroughs in science and technology have come from the world of chemistry. Emerging and fast-growing areas like nanomaterials, industrial polymers, vaccine development, and green chemistry continue to open doors for science-minded students.
With multiple concentrations to choose from, you can tailor your chemistry degree to your career interests. For example, the biochemistry focus is perfect for pre-health professions students. And the chemical physics concentration is great preparation for graduate school and research careers.
Introduction
ACS-Certified Program
JCU’s chemistry major is approved by the American Chemical Society. This means you have an option to pursue an ACS-certified degree by taking a selection of rigorous chemistry courses and participating in upper-level labs and research.
Hands-On Research
Assist your professor with their research, work on a project of your own, or participate in a prestigious summer program. You might even get to present at DISCOVER, JCU’s annual celebration of research, creativity, and academic achievement.
Student Involvement
Get involved with the American Chemical Society Student Affiliates, Pre-Health Society, Environmental Issues Group, or Iota Sigma Pi (the national honor society for women in chemistry).

Program Overview & Outcomes
When you major in chemistry at JCU, you’ll join a close-knit community where you’ll receive personalized attention from faculty members in and out of the classroom. You’ll learn and experiment in state-of-the-art facilities that rival those found in major research universities.
Chemistry majors will learn to:- Demonstrate a working knowledge in the sub-disciplines of chemistry where they have completed coursework (at least four of analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and physical).
- Apply their integrative knowledge of chemistry to solve problems.
- Demonstrate competency in the laboratory skills necessary to acquire, analyze, and interpret experimental results.
- Effectively communicate scientific information in a variety of forms (written, oral, mathematical).
